PROJECT: Evaluation of Book Buddies Tutoring Program of the United Way of Central New York

/ CHALLENGE

Book Buddies (BB), a volunteer-driven tutoring program in the Syracuse City School District, pairs community volunteers with students in kindergarten through Grade 3 to improve reading and literacy skills. The program needed independent evaluation to assess effectiveness and demonstrate outcomes to funders and stakeholders.

/ SOLUTION

A&O designed and implemented a mixed-methods evaluation of Book Buddies. We analyze DIBELS assessment data using a pre/post design with comparison groups, and supplement these results with surveys and focus groups involving tutors, program staff, parents, and students. The evaluation examines growth in student fluency, vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension, while also documenting program implementation and stakeholder perspectives.

I’ve had the privilege of working with A&O for for several years across multiple literacy initiatives. A&O brings a deep understanding of both early literacy and school-community collaboration. They’re not just skilled at collecting and analyzing data—they help us make sense of it in ways that improve our practice and support our students. Their thoughtful, collaborative approach makes them a true partner in this work. I’ve come to rely on their insights, responsiveness, and professionalism, and I highly recommend them to any organization seeking a meaningful, results-focused evaluation partner.
